Synthetic dental composite materials inspired by the hierarchical organization of shark tooth enameloid

Abstract

The overall goal of this project is to design synthetic dental composite materials inspired by the hierarchical organization of shark tooth enameloid that exploit the advantages of fluoroapatite and provide similar properties in terms of load resistance and fracture toughness. These bio-inspired composites could be used as tooth restoration materials in dentistry, e.g., for inlays. For this we will mimic the structure of the enameloid on the hierarchy levels 2 and 3 (i.e. fluoroapatite crystallites forming bundles) by synthesizing fluoroapatite rods with similar structural parameters, but larger dimensions. From these, we will create composite materials inspired by hierarchy levels 3 and 3* by using suitable organic matrices and methods to arrange the fluoroapatite crystallites in the densest packing possible in order to minimize the organic content. We will combine experiments with a theoretical approach in order to understand the enameloid fracture behavior on the small length scales. The results will be used as input in the concurrent synthesis with the goal to optimize the achieved synthetic composites towards a fracture behavior similar to the natural model material.

In summary, the following main objectives shall be achieved in this project:

  1. Further development of the synthesis of hierarchical mineral/polymer-composites using various crystal morphologies of fluoroapatite and different biocompatible polymers
  2. Structural and mechanical characterization of the synthetic composites
  3. Biocompatibility tests and corrosion experiments
  4. Analysis of the fracture behavior of shark tooth enameloid and synthetic composites
  5. Numerical study of the fracture behavior of shark tooth enameloid and synthetic mineral/polymer-composites
