Hierarchy of microstructural features as the origin of fracture resistance in dentine and ceramic composites.

Abstract

Dentine and dental ceramics have very different structures and properties, yet they need to function under similar harsh intra-oral conditions. For teeth and in particular dentine, a tough and fatigue resistant natural hierarchical composite, we investigate deformation, microcracking, crack-deflection and crack-stopping mechanisms at the nm/sub-μm, supra-μm, and the sub-mm length-scales. We will use our dentine findings to inspire the design of hierarchical microstructural features in sintered conventional dental ceramics. Precision fabrication of thin zirconia bars will be combined with electrophoretic deposition to create layered hierarchical structures containing interfaces, zones of controlled porosity and stiffness gradients. We will combine mechanical testing under different humidity conditions with advanced materials characterisation methods (X-ray diffraction/imaging, microscopy and optical deformation mapping (ESPI/shearography)) so as to identify important fracture sites and to study interactions of the damage with the varying microstructure. The varying density and distribution of pores/canals might toughen the constructs when placed in polar solvents, and will be studied. Surface displacement measurements will be interpreted by comparison with simulation (Finite-element or other), so as to understand and possibly predict increasingly elaborate structures to be produced. We expect constructs with improved crack resistance and toughness due to mechanisms that operate jointly at different length-scales of the hierarchical structure.
