Crustacean skeletal elements: variations in the constructional morphology at different hierarchical levels

Abstract

The crustacean cuticle consists of an organic matrix and a mineral phase that can contain Mg-calcite, amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) and amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP). The organic matrix is hierarchically organised based on fibrils of protein coated chitin crystallites that can assemble to fibres which orient parallel to each other forming planes. In superimposed planes the fibre orientation changes helically forming microscopic stacks in a typical twisted plywood structure that further organise to form superordinated macroscopic principal layers. The cuticle forms an exoskeleton that surrounds the whole organism and subdivides into skeletal elements that shape the body and ensure its functionality. The structural, chemical and physical properties of the skeletal elements are adapted to their function and the eco-physiological strains of the animal. How and at which hierarchical level the physical properties of skeletal elements are modified is only insufficiently understood. The goal of this multi-disciplinary project is to investigate the interrelationship between the structure, the chemical composition, and the physical properties in a comparative approach. Based on this, a mathematical model will be developed that can systematically describe materials properties from the atomic to the macroscopic scale in order to gain a deeper understanding of hierarchically organised materials.
