"The hierarchical architecture, self-healing ability, adaptive behavior and intricate combination of organic matter, inorganic species and living cells observed in biological hybrid structures find no counterpart in today’s artificial materials. Combining for example the structural design concepts of natural hybrid materials with the wealth of chemical compositions available in synthetic systems will possibly enable the assembly of bioinspired artificial materials exhibiting novel unusual properties. Of particular interest is also the ability of all biosystems to respond and adapt to substantial or slight alterations in the environment. Transferring such adaptive and self-healing characteristics into bioinspired processing routes should lead to a novel class of functional materials, which conquer the interface between synthetic and bio. Implementation of structural design principles, adaptive, responsive and self-healing behavior as well as self-reproduction, self-assembly and self-regeneration from nature into artificial materials (self-X materials) requires an extensive interdisciplinary approach involving both scientific and technological challenges. The purpose of this symposium is to discuss the latest results of current basic and applied research work on micro- and nanostructured, hierarchical, interactive, responsive and self-X bioinspired materials including their potential applications in engineering, medicine and biotechnology. We encourage contributions from research groups working in the fields of biological and artificial adaptivity, self-assembly, self-healing, stimuli responsive and hierarchically structured bio- and engineering materials."
